2006 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature
Constitutional Amendment. Requires a person to have been admitted to the practice of law for ten years preceding election to the supreme court or a court of appeals and for eight years preceding election to a district court, family court, parish court, or court having solely juvenile jurisdiction. Decreases the requirement that a person be domiciled in the respective district, circuit, or parish from two years to one year preceding election. Effective 1/1/08, and applicable to any person who is elected to the office of judge on and after 1/1/08. Provides for submission of the proposed amendment to the voters at the statewide election to be held 9/30/06. (Amends Const. Art. V, §24)

Orleans Parish Court Consolidation Bill. Consolidates the civil and criminal courts and the clerks of the respective courts into the 41st Judicial District Court, establishes one clerk of court for Orleans Parish and consolidates the offices of civil and criminal sheriff into one sheriff’s office for Orleans Parish. Various implementation dates are set forth in the Act.
