Compulsory Limits Increase Passes the House
By a vote of 57-35, the House of Representatives passed HB 1312 by Rep. Erich Ponti. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration. HB 1312 increases the minimum compulsory liability limits from 10/20/10 to 25/50/25.
Rep. Ponti presented figures for insurance quotes he had gathered on both the current and the proposed levels of insurance for a hypothetical driver, with the same criteria submitted to each company for quotes. His figures show that for most companies the difference in the quoted premiums was between 7 percent and 11 percent. Only one company quoted a rate increase of 24 percent.
Additionally, Rep. Ponti pointed out that choosing a higher deductible for portions of the coverage would result in lower overall premiums, even with increased liability coverage.
