Auto Liability Limits Increase Passes Senate Committee; Drastic Amendment
HB 1312 by Rep. Erich Ponti to raise the minimum limits of compulsory liability coverage was heard in Senate Insurance Committee today. The original bill would have raised limits from current rates of 10/20/10 to 25/50/25, the same limits passed by the Legislature last year and vetoed by Gov. Blanco. Initial discussion in the committee centered on word from the governor’s staff that the bill in its present form would be vetoed. The committee amended the bill to change the limits to 15/30/25 with the implementation of those changes deferred until Jan. 1, 2010.
The amendment to scale back the proposed increase and postpone the effective date was adopted without opposition and the amended bill passed out of committee without opposition.
As the committee finished hearing the bill, the chairman, Sen. Donald Cravins Jr., commented on the need to check with Gov. Jindal to find out whether or not he would veto the bill, if it passes in its amended form.
The bill now goes to the Senate floor for a vote early next week.
